Definition
• An unusually large
sea wave
produced by a
seaquake or
undersea volcanic
eruption.
How Tsunamis occur
• Tsunamis occur when
two oceanic crusts
below the ocean collide
and an earthquake
happens.
• The earthquake
displaces water at the
bottom of the ocean.
This creates wall of
water on the surface of
the ocean.
Effects and hazards of Tsunamis
• Most devastating natural disaster
• Debris are thrown every where
• Fires start from gas and broken
electrical wires
• Most commonly cause huge floods
• Can destroy buildings and
skyscrapers

• A tsunami is usually a
series of waves and not
just one
• The word tsunami comes
from the Japan meaning of
“harbor wave”
• Travel thousands of miles
in open ocean
• They can travel up too 500
miles an hour
• Before a tsunami hits the
shoreline, it recedes

• The largest tsunami ever
recorded was 1,720 feet tall
in Libyuta, Alaska
• The highest death toll for a
tsunami was 40,000.

March 11 at 2:46 PM
• It happened 80 miles off
of the coast of Honshu,
Japan
• Sendai was hardest hit by
this devastating tsunami
• Nearly 7,000 people are
confirmed dead and over
10,000 are still missing

feet to the west
• They’ve had over
100 aftershocks,
over 24 have been
over 6 magnitude.
Japan Nuclear plants
• The Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear plant
reactors have blown up.
• The plant is starting to give off more
radiation levels everyday.
• People have been asked to remain sealed
indoors.
• In the unit 4 reactor an explosion occurred
causing chemicals to get into a boiling
lake.
