Families of elements
How elements are grouped
• Elements are grouped together because
they have similar properties.
• There are three main groups:
– Metals
– Semiconductors
– Nonmetals
Metals
• There are three types of metals
– Alkali metals
• Found in group one
• Very reactive
– Alkaline-earth metals
• All of group two
• Commonly form +2 ions
– Transition metals
• Groups 3-12
• Good conductors of heat and electricity
• Easy to shape
Semiconductors
• There are only 6
• Have metallic & non
metallic properties
• Silicon – 28% of the Earth’s
crust, in computer chips,
and sand
• Can conduct heat and
electricity some of the time.
Nonmetals
There are three types of nonmetals:
• Noble gasses
– Non reactive
– Group18
• Halogens
– very reactive
– Group17
• Other nonmetals
– reactive
– Very important to life
Important nonmetals
• Carbon
– found in all living things
• Nitrogen
– Most abundant gas in the air
• Oxygen
– necessary for many forms of
life
• Sulfur
– Forms negative ions
– Forms smelly compounds
Review
1. Alkali metals are very __________________.
2. Silicon is used in computer chips because it is
a ______________________.
3. Neon does not react with other elements
because it is a ________________ gas.
