Metals
• Learning Objectives• To be able to identify common metals
• To understand the differing properties of
metals and that these can be ‘designed’
• To be aware of the various stock forms
available.
• To be familiar with basic machining methods
Metals sources and classifications
• Mostly mined from the earth’s crust as ores
that are then processed (smelted).
• FERROUS metals contain iron (Fe) and
generally corrode (rust).
• NON-FERROUS metals conversely do not
contain iron and are generally pure metals.
• ALLOYS are a mixture of metals enabling their
combined properties to be utilised.
FERROUS metals
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Contain iron
Include types such as:
Cast iron
High carbon steels
Stainless steel
Steel
They generally rust with the exception of
stainless steel.
NON-FERROUS metals
• Do not contain iron and are quite rare, difficult
to process and thus expensive.
• Includes types such as:
• Copper
• Zinc
• Aluminium
• Gold
• Silver
Alloys
• A combination of two or more metals in order
to better their properties and characteristics.
• We can change:
• The melting point
• The colour
• Electrical/thermal properties
• Alter strength, hardness and ductility
Common stock forms
• Sheet
• Tube- square and round
• Extrusions (profiles)
• Metal bar and rod
Metal machining
• Turning
• Milling
• Drilling
