Genetic Engineering
CH. 13
Selective Breeding
• Allowing only those with desired character
istics to produce the next generation
Inbreeding
• Continued breeding of individuals with similar
characteristics
• Useful in retaining a certain set of
characteristics
• Can produce some serious genetic defects
Genetic Engineering
• DNA extraction
• Remove DNA from cell
• Cutting DNA
– Restriction enzymes cut DNA into smaller
fragments
• Separating
– Gel electrophoresis
Using the DNA Sequence
• Read the Sequence
– Based on the base pairs
• Cutting and Pasting
– Recombinant DNA
• Made by combining DNA from different sources
• Making Copies
Applications of Genetic Engineering
• Transgenic Organisms
– Contain genes from other organisms
– Usually bacteria because they reproduce rapidly
and are easy to grow.
Cloning
• A clone is a member of a population of
genetically identical cells produced from a
single cell.
