How Penicillin Works
• Penicillin bind to the enzyme
transpeptidease which links polypeptide
chains in bacteria.
• No tranpeptidease means very weak
cell wall.
• Since the cell has an osmotic imbalance
it explodes and dies!
• Excess polypeptide chains triggers the
production of hydrolysis and autolysis
which tell the bacteria to start digesting
excess polypeptide chains.
• Now that cell is really screwed! As well
as the other ones around it!
Well then How Does the
Penicillin survive the Stomach
Acid Lava!?!?!
• Penicillin used to be injected into the
body because the stomach acid would
kill it before it had its chance in the
spotlight of human digestive track!
• Side chain modification can make
penicillin resistant to the stomach acid
in the stomach and other enzymes/body
fluids so they can be ingested and put
to work.
