POST-OPERATIVE CARE
for your NEUTERED PET
Your pet has just been neutered. Complications from this routine procedure
are rare. Should you have any questions or concerns regarding your pets’
recovery do not hesitate to call us at 905-649-1993, we will be happy to
answer them.
1.
The day after your pet has been neutered he may still be tired from the
anesthetic and his experience in the hospital. Therefore, it is important to let
him relax and sleep in a quiet room away from other pets for as long as he
needs.
2.
Once your pet begins to become more active you may provide him with a bowl
of water and a small portion of his regular dinner. If he does not eat that is
o.k., but do not overfeed him if he seems like he is still hungry. His appetite will
return to normal within 1-2 days.
3.
You should not allow your pet to run or jump excessively for the first 3-5 days
following surgery in order to allow the incision to heal properly.
4.
Some pets will lick the incision site occasionally to keep it clean – this is normal.
However, excessive licking can introduce the bacteria from his mouth into the
incision site and cause it to become infected. If your pet appears to be overly
concerned with the incision attempt to re-direct his attention from the site.
Increased redness, swelling, and puss from the incision site is not normal. If
you notice any of these symptoms please give us a call to let us know.
5.
Your pets stitches are dissolvable and do not need to be removed.
6.
Do not bath your pet for 7-10 days.
