Too Many Mouths to Feed?
• The world population has doubled in the
last 30 years.
• 3 babies born every second.
• This has lead to famine especially in
developing and underdeveloped countries.
How do we produce food now?
Use machines
• Faster and more effective
• Widely used
Use more land for farms
• One third of the world’s
land has already been
used for farming
• Land cleared and
threatened wildlife habitat

GM Food
• GM is a special set of technologies that
alter the genetic makeup of organisms
such as animals, plants or bacteria.
• Scientists can now alter the characteristics
of food by splicing genes from a plant into
a totally unrelated plant.

Lina’s Opinion
“I’m Lina from Exton, Pennyslvia, USA. I believe
that we should research GM food, because it has
great potential to help mankind. But it is not yet
perfected and should not be marketed until it’s
100 per cent safe. I’m concerned that new foods
could cause allergies and other health risks.
Another danger is that GM “super crops” may
cross-breed and create “super weeds”, which
could wipe out other native plants. The release of
these GM foods could do more harm that good if
they are not completely safe”
Bramwall (1999)
