HERPES SIMPLEX
HSV I
Virus that causes cold sores
Not sexually transmitted
HSV II
Virus that causes genital sores (BLISTERS)
Spread through sexual contact
SYMPTOMS
• Blisterlike bumps (2-20 days after exposure)
• Enlarged lymph nodes
• Fever
• Headaches
• Fatigue
Symptoms do not need to be present in order
to contract herpes
Although sores disappear the virus remains
in the body
DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT
• A tissue culture of an active blister is
used to diagnose HSV II
• There is no cure
• A medication called, Acyclovir helps
with pain and healing of blisters
• Herpes is linked to cervical cancer cells
Affects on baby
• Higher risk of miscarriage
• Premature birth
• High death rate among babies born to
mothers who have an active outbreak
• Higher risk of brain damage if infection
is active during labor
GENITAL WARTS
• Reddish warts with cauliflower tops
that appear on genitals
• Also known as Human Papillomavirus
• Takes up to 6 months after exposure
for symptoms to appear
• #1 cause of cervical cancer in women
SYMPTOMS
• Cauliflower like warts on area of
genitals
• Including anus, vagina, penis, throat
• Symptoms do not have to be present to
contract
DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT
• Possibly during pap smear
• Removal of warts through laser
surgery, scalpel, or freezing the warts

A vaccine to protect against certain
strains of HPV (6,11,l6,18)
3 injections over 6 months:
First dose: At a date you and your doctor or healthcare
professional choose
Second dose: 2 months after the first dose
Third dose: 6 months after the first dose
GARDASIL (cont)
• GARDASIL may not fully protect everyone
and does not prevent all types of cervical
cancer, so it is important to continue regular
cervical cancer screenings.
• GARDASIL will not treat cervical cancer and
genital warts and will not protect against
diseases caused by other HPV types.
