Sexually Transmitted Disease
Literal interpretation:
A disease that is passed from one person to another through
sexual contact
POSSIBLE ROUTES
1. Penis to vagina
2. Penis to mouth
3. Penis to anus
4. Vagina to mouth
5. Vagina to vagina
6. Any way that blood or body fluids can be transmitted
1. Sharing drug needles
2. Open sores
3. Blood transfusions
TEEN STATISTICS
 47% report being sexually active
 41% did not use a condom
 15% had sex with 4+ ppl
 Only 22% tested for HIV
 In 2013, nearly 10,000 teens/young people (13-24) dx’d
with HIV
 10 million teens dx’d with STDs each year
CHLAMYDIA
• One of the most frequently occuring STDs
• S/Sx:
• Male: burning with urination, mucoid discharge
• Female: typically asymptomatic, some may have discharge
• Leads to sterility and PID
• Tx: ABX

GONORRHEA
• Caused by bacteria
• S/SX:
• Male: greenish/yellow d/c, burning with urination, sore
throat and swollen glands
• Female: often asymptomatic, but may have dysuria, pain in
lower abd, greenish/yellow d/c
• Infected woman can transmit to infant during childbirth
causing blindness
• Tx: large doses of ABX
