Why is Community Service
Important?
• Being involved with community
service is a great way to build strong
character.
• Getting involved can help you meet
new friends, learn about what is going
on in your community, and will also
give you the satisfaction of knowing
you can make a difference in other
people’s lives.
What is Relay for Life?
• Relay For Life is a
fun-filled, overnight
event to raise funds
for research and
programs for the
Cancer Society.
.....
• This is an event for people of all ages
and levels of fitness and is open to
everyone in the community, with
teams formed between friends, family
and workmates.
FYE Team
• To be on a team, we had to
register online with a $5 donation
plus any other money we would
like to add.
• The FYE team had tie-dye as an
activity; towels for $5 and wash
rags for $3. The money we raised
went to the American Cancer
Society.
Hang Cancer Out to Dry
• Our team’s
theme was
“Hanging out
cancer to dry,”
and our activity
was tie-dye.
Setting up
• We cut out
pictures of
cloths to hang
up on the
cloths line, that
went along with
our
decorations.
.....
• Once we got
done decorating,
we got a chance
to hang out and
socialize, before
the relay began.
Relay begins
• Dr. Schmier, a
cancer
survivor, was
the guest
speaker, and
he walked a
few laps with
Jenny,
Heather, and I.
• The track was
decorated
with
luminaries in
memory of
many loved
ones that lost
their fight
against
• When it
was time
for the
relay,
Jenny,
Heather,
and I
walked a
few laps
• Two of the
girls on our
team having a
blast with the
tie-dye.
Why did I joined Relay for
Life?
• Just this past year my mother was
battling breast cancer. She made it
through the fight, but it still
haunts me to know that my
mother was lucky, and that there
are many daughters out there in
this world that have lost their
mothers.
• Cancer is as real as you and me and
we must all help those in need to find
a cure. It may not be a concern to
those who are not harmed by cancer,
but millions of people each year loose
their life to cancer.
In Conclusion. . .
• Community service is very important,
and is a good way to build a stronger,
more united community. To some it
may seem like a burden but in the
end, you have to realize that not
everyone can be as fortunate as others
and they need our support.
• Relay for life is a good and fun way to
give back, and to help those in need.
