Basic philosophy for email and web sites
• Taunton School blocks user-access to a huge number of
inappropriate emails and unsuitable sites. We do this by the
exclusive method, which means that when an offending email or
web site, we prevent user access to it. This is in contrast to the
inclusive method, which restricts access to all web sites, except
those identified as appropriate.
• If a story would be reported in the National Press we are likely to
permit it.
Inappropriate material includes:
• Illegal Images as classified by the Internet Watch
Foundation
• Pornography
• Anything that promotes the use of illegal drugs and
substance abuse
• Violence
• Intolerance
• Social networking websites
• Copyright infringement and plagiarism

Web sites
• Multiple filtering groups based on age and role (ie
staff or student)
• url blocklist eg www.porn.com
• Content filtering by phrase based weighted lists
• Image filtering
• No streaming media available
• No social networking sites eg bebo, myspace
• Usenet sites filtered eg alt.sex.stories.d
• Gaming sites are not permitted
• Google safe searches only
Social networking sites
• Potentially great fun

• Significant danger of cyber bullying or worse
as live chat rooms are not moderated
Monitoring
