SOCIAL NET WORKING SITES
• What social networking sites do you use?
How often do you use them?
• Have you or a friend ever had a negative
experience on a social networking site?
What happened?
• Why do you like social networking sites?
• Have you ever posted a comment or a
photo online you later wanted to remove?
Were you able to take it down?
YOUR REPUTATION
Reputations are easily ruined by posts that
spread like wildfire over the Internet. Like
the game of telephone, even innocent
stories can become negative and
ultimately be read or seen by millions.
Comments, photos, and actions easily
forgotten in person can take on a long life
of their own when posted online.

PRIVATE OR PUBLIC?
A “private” photo sent to a friend can often
become public. Soon, the photo has "gone
viral." People often make quick judgments
about what they see online. When posting
online imagine your audience – your
grandmother, for example. What does your
online personality say about you?
CYBER-BULLYING:
Using the internet and social networking sites to
harass, tease, or intimidate others.
• Comments, even when meant in a joking or
unintentional way, can cause hurt feelings and
real emotion and have serious consequences.
• Ensure you stay positive when interacting with
others online and avoid any personal attacks.
• If you are being bullied online save records or
screen shots of your communication to share
with adults and possibly police.
UNWANTED VISITORS
• All internet activity leaves an online trail
of personal information.
• Unwanted visitors gain access to your
personal identification through
"spoofing" and "phishing.”
• Social networking sites have made it
easier for criminals to steal personal
information.
DATA MINING
What is data mining and how is the data
utilized?
From the words typed or the pictures you
click on, everything an Internet user is
interested in goes into a massive data
bank. Social networking sites collect, use
and sell personal information and
preferences.
ONLINE PREDATORS
What can you do to protect your
personal information and avoid online
predators?
THE IMPORTANT STUFF…
Remember…The Internet is like a big
city with all the positive and negative
aspects of a big city.
What are the key tips and main points
for making the best choices online?
THE IMPORTANT STUFF…
• It’s easy for an online photo or message to
‘go viral,’ meaning it can quickly circulate to
hundreds or thousands of people without
your knowledge.
• Once something is posted online it’s almost
impossible to remove it entirely.
• Negative or unflattering search results
might come back to hurt you.
• Cyberbullying has many negative
consequences–those bullied are hurt and
those doing the bullying can be charged
with a crime.
THE IMPORTANT STUFF…
• Never meet an online acquaintance in person.
• Online activities are tracked through data mining.
• Use good judgment when posting personal photos
online–don’t post anything you wouldn’t want a
parent or teacher to see. Encourage your friends
to use the same good judgment if they are posting
photos that include you.
• Avoid logging in to social networking sites–or
other sites that require a password–from a public
computer. If you do so, ensure that you log out of
the site and close the internet browser before you
leave.
• Ensure that your social networking settings keep
your personal info private.
