Our Children Online
Internet awareness & safety
ST. JOSEPH’S N.S.
PARENTS ASSOCIATION
Session #1
GOAL
Help and empower our children
to use the internet
Safely and Responsibly
Adults often have anxieties about new media…
Everything that’s already in the world when
you’re born is just normal;

Anything that gets invented between then and
before you turn 30 is incredibly exciting and
creative – and with any luck you can make a
career out of it;

“Anything that gets
invented after you’re 30
is against the natural
order of things and the
beginning of the end of
civilisation as we know it
…until it’s been around
for about 10 years when
it gradually turns out to
be alright really.”

Younger Children
Use the internet with your child
Block inappropriate content (with parental controls &
safety settings)
Bookmark positive & appropriate web sites
Use child-friendly directories & search engines
Children ask permission before filling out online forms
or entering information about themselves
Delay using e-mail & social networking sites until
parent is sure that they can handle potential problems
Younger Children
Keep computers in an open area (e.g. not bedroom)
Create a list of internet “family rules”
Teach your child about privacy – what information
should not be shared online
Teach your child never to share passwords
Encourage your child to come to you if they
encounter anything online that makes them feel
uncomfortable or threatened
Older Children
Explain that nothing that is online is completely
private!
Make sure that older children use privacy settings on
their social network pages
Remind them to respect the privacy of others
Don’t engage in pranking, bullying, etc.
Help your children think long-term: they’re leaving a
“digital footprint” whenever they go online
Keep talking with your child about what they do
online, just as you speak about what they do “offline”
