What do you think is happening in this image?
Nicolas Rolin (1376/1380–1462), who was chancellor
to Philip the Good, duke of Burgundy, is
worshiping the Infant Jesus, who blesses him,
holding a globe of the world as a sign of his power
over Creation.
The central role of Mary, mother of Christ, is
emphasized by her royal crown, which is carried
by angels. There is an imaginary, idealized
landscape and architecture symbolic of a basilica.
The painting is now in the Louvre in Paris

15th century people changed their views on the world.
Their fear turned into confidence and people wanted
to know more about being human.
This was expressed through art .

Italy was made up of several city states.
The states were run by wealthy families.
They surrounded themselves with artists to paint
portraits, make sculptures and monuments to show
their wealth.
Without these families there would have been no
renaissance.
