 What do you think is happening in this image?
 Nicolas Rolin (1376/1380–1462), who was chancellor
to Philip the Good, duke of Burgundy, is
worshiping the Infant Jesus, who blesses him,
holding a globe of the world as a sign of his power
over Creation.
 The central role of Mary, mother of Christ, is
emphasized by her royal crown, which is carried
by angels. There is an imaginary, idealized
landscape and architecture symbolic of a basilica.
 The painting is now in the Louvre in Paris

 Their fear turned into confidence and people wanted
to know more about being human.

 Italy was made up of several city states.
 The states were run by wealthy families.
 They surrounded themselves with artists to paint
portraits, make sculptures and monuments to show
their wealth.
 Without these families there would have been no
renaissance.
