World Wide Web (Week 2)
Also known as the Web, it is a system that
lets you access information on the Internet.
People often use the term Web to refer to
the Internet, but they are not exactly the
same thing. The World Wide Web operates
over the Internet, and it is the most widely
used part of the Internet.
Navigation (Internet) (Week 2)
Finding your way from page to page on the
World Wide Web.
Copyright Law (Week 3)
It gives exclusive right to the creator of the
work.
Virus (Week 3)
A software program capable of reproducing
itself and usually capable of causing great
harm to files or other programs on the same
computer.
Hard Drive (Week 4)
High capacity file storage.
Also called a fixed drive.
Storage Device (Week 4)
A device that preserves information for
retrieval.
A piece of hardware whose main function
is to store data.
Memory (Week 5)
RAM (Random Access Memory)
Short term or temporary memory.
ROM (Read Only Memory)
Long term or permanent memory.
Reboot (Week 5)
The process that starts operating systems
when the user turns on a computer system.
To restart a computer already running.
The process of turning a computer system
or printer off and then back on again, to
reload the software.
Technical Difficulty (Week 6)
A problem with the proficiency of
equipment.
Troubleshooting (Week 6)
The identification and resolution of
problems, especially problems of a
technical nature.
Data Update (Week 7)
The process where information is modified
to the most current version.
Network (Week 7)
When you have two or more computers
connected to each other, you have a
network. A network allows the computers
to share information, software and
equipment. A device called a file server has
the master files and programs on a disk that
the computers will use.
Modem (Week 8)
Electronic equipment consisting of a device
used to connect computers by a telephone
line.
Equipment connected to a computer for
sending/receiving digital information by
telephone line. You need a modem to
connect to the Internet, to send electronic
mail and to fax.
Kilobyte (Week 8)
Amount of space needed to store one
thousand characters (bytes).
Megabyte (Week 9)
Amount of space needed to store one
million characters (bytes).
A unit of information equal to 1000
kilobytes.
Gigabyte (Week 9)
Amount of space needed to store one
billion characters (bytes).
A unit of information equal to 1000
megabytes.
Function (Week 10)
A mathematical relation such that each
element of a given set is associated with an
element of another set.
A set sequence of steps, part of larger
computer program.
Database (Week 10)
A collection of data organized in a
systematic manner.
Example: telephone book (yellow pages).
