Transcript Reproductive System
All organisms reproduce
If they reproduce sexually, they create egg
and sperm cells
The function of an organism’s reproductive
system to produce more organisms like itself
Males and females produce different types of
reproductive cells
Male cells are called sperm
Female cells are called eggs
The reproductive system
is controlled by the
release of hormones from
the endocrine system
These hormones start the
process of sexual
development and maintain
secondary sex
characteristics
Each sex cell only carries
half of the number of
chromosome
Offspring will be a random
mixture of the parents’
genes from these two cells
Different combinations of
dominant and recessive
genes in each sibling will
cause them to be different
Hormones are chemicals made in the body to
cause the body to change
The primary female hormones made in the
ovaries are estrogen and progesterone
The primary male hormone made in the
testes is testosterone
Fertilization occurs when the
egg and one sperm join
Occurs in the Fallopian tubes
Fertilized egg will soon
begin to multiply into a
small ball of cells
Fertilized egg will remain in
uterus for about 40 weeks
First 9 weeks of pregnancy
Grows to the size of an adult thumb
Most major body parts have formed
9 weeks to 40 weeks of
pregnancy
Floats in an amniotic sac of
fluid
Receives nutrition from
umbilical cord attached to
placenta
Body parts need time to
finish developing
