Massaccio Biographical Sketch
• Massaccio (1401 - 1428) painted during the
Quattrocento period of the Italian Renaissance. He was
born in what is now Arezzo, Tuscany. He joined the
painter's guild in Florence in 1422. His work displays his
mastery of depth and three-dimensionality. His figures
are convincing and lifelike. His art took on a GrecoRoman influence when he traveled with Masolino to
Rome. It also lost its Gothic and Byzantine influences as
a result of this trip. In his later life, he left many
paintings unfinished. He was important in moving
Italian painting away from Gothic art, and closer to a
humanist style.
