Brooklyn is one of the five boroughs of New York City.
It’ the most populous and second-largest in area.
Brooklyn is known for it’s
distincive culture,
independent art scene
and unique architectures.
It has many times
appeared in popular
culture.
Brooklyn has it’s own flag, seal and motto which is
„In unity there is a strength”.
CULTURE
The borough has been recognized as a birthplace of
hip-hop culture. Many rap acts come from there like
Jay-Z, Notorious B.I.G. There’s also The Brooklyn
Hip-Hop Festival which celebrates the culture.
In brooklyn there is second-largest in size
national museum known as Brooklyn Museum. It holds
1.5 milion works from egyptian to contemporary
works.
There’s also Brooklyn Children’s Museum which is
dedicated to children. It was also first museum in
United States.
Brooklyn Academy of Music is a major performing arts
venue that is known for avant garde and progressive
performances. It was built in 1908.
Brooklyn has also appeared in popular culture
through films like: Saturday Night Fever, She’s Gotta
have It, Goodfellas and shows like The Cosby
Show and 2 Broke Girls.
FAMOUS PLACES
Brooklyn Botanic Garden is botanical garden located in
Brooklyn it has around 12 000 species of plants and
there’s over 700 000 visitors each year.
Williamsburg Savings Bank Tower used to be a
headquarters for the Williamsburg Savings Bank but
now is luxury hotel. Building is one of the highest
four-sided clock towers in the world.
Brooklyn Bridge is a bridge that connects boroughs of
Manhattan and Brooklyn it has been completed in 1883
and is one of the oldest suspension bridges in the United
States
Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Arch
Coney Island is a residential neighborhood with a
population of 60 000 and is most known for it’s
amusement parks and seaside resort.
SPORTS
Brooklyn Nets are a team that is based in Brooklyn.
Barclays Center is a well known indoor arena that is not
only a sport center but also organizes concerts and
conventions. Brooklyn has also been a home to Mike
Tyson while Michael Jordan was born there.
CRIMES
East New York is neighborhood that has many social
problems like poverty, drug addction and homicides.
It has highest crime rate in Brooklyn and is known as
boroughs murder capital.
