How the Project was formed
In 1997 a group of women in the west end of Newcastle met to
discuss drug and alcohol problems they had in their community
Formed a peer support group (Scotswood Women’s Family
Support Group) to tackle issues and to campaign for better
support for families
2002 received funding to establish a city-wide service and relaunched as PROPS
2007 following a tendering process, we were awarded the contract
to develop a service in North Tyneside
2012 Re-launch in July as we are now PROPS North East due to
the development of the service

Why is it important to
support and involve Carers?
Carers have first hand experience of the impact of
drugs and alcohol on families and communities
They have a positive influence in helping their family
member to: engage, sustain, and succeed in
treatment and recovery
Carers have views about the support within services
that help and those that don’t
They care about the services that are available in
their own areas for themselves and others and are
willing to give their time.
