• Big Stick Policy: Belief of Teddy Roosevelt that
by having a very strong military, other countries
will do what you ask.
• Roosevelt Corollary: Additional to the Monroe
Doctrine, Roosevelt now said the U.S. was “in
charge” of the W. Hemisphere
• Great White Fleet: Roosevelt ordered the
circumnavigation of the globe by our new navy.
We wanted to show off our superiority.
Other Imperialism Notes
• Russo-Japanese War: Roosevelt earns the
Nobel Peace Prize by ending the war between
Russia and Japan
• Dollar Diplomacy: Belief of Taft that we could
control other countries by investing in their
economies and then threatening to take it away.
• Moral Diplomacy: Belief of Wilson that we
needed to intervene whenever a country was
committing human rights violations.
Other Imperialism Notes
• Jingoism: EXTREME nationalism. Example
during this time is Josiah Strong.
• Anti-Imperialist League: group against
imperialism because they believed we were
violating the rights of other countries. (ex: Mark
Twain)
• Seward’s Folly: the annexation of Alaska from
Russia
• Good Neighbor Policy: action by FDR that ends
the Roosevelt Corollary in 1930’s.
