What is a drug?
• ARE SUBSTANCES OTHER THAN
FOOD THAT CHANGE THE
STRUCTURE OR FUNCTION OF THE
BODY OR MIND
• Medicine: are drugs that are used to
treat or prevent diseases and other
conditions
• All medicines are drugs, but not all
drugs are medicines
How can drugs or medicines enter
the body?
• Ingestion- Ingested or swallowed
-Pills, tablets, capsules, liquids
• Injection- Given through a needle
- Directly into blood, through vein or muscle
• Inhalation- Breathed in
- Liquid or substance can be changed into a
fine mist and be inhaled

• NARCOTICS: SPECIFIC DRUGS THAT
ARE OBTAINABLE ONLY BY
PERSCRIPTION AND ARE USED TO
RELIEVE PAIN.
• STIMULANT: SUBSTANCES THAT
SPEED UP THE BODY’S FUNCTIONS.
• DEPRESSANT: SUBSTANCES THAT
SLOW DOWN THE BODY’S
FUNCTIONS AND REACTIONS
Narcotics
• Heroin: Made from morphine
• Most Commonly abused narcotic
• Highly addictive
• Not able to get fix = severe pain
• Heroin depresses the CNS = coma or
death
• Mainly injected into blood stream (HIV)
