Narcotics, Stimulants, and
Depressants

• Why do you think some drugs are illegal?
• What is the difference between drug abuse
and drug misuse?
Drug Misuse
• Using a drug without following the directions
• Combining medicines without a physican’s
advice
• Taking more of a drug then the doctor ordered
• Using a drug prescribed to someone else
• Giving your prescription to someone else
• Using a drug for longer then a physician
advises.
Drug Abuse
• Using any illegal drug
• Using a medicine when you do not need it
• Taking a substance that was not meant to
enter the body
• Using a drug for purposes other than medical
treatment
• Faking health problems to obtain or renew a
prescription
Narcotics
• Narcotics- specific drugs that are obtainable only
by prescription and are used to relieve pain. They
are very addictive. Ex oxycotin, Percocet, vicodin.
• Addiction-a physical or psychological need for a
drug.
• Heroin-illegal narcotic made from morphine.
Most commonly abused narcotic next to
painkillers. Highly addictive usually hooked after
first try. Severe pain from withdrawal.
Stimulants and Depressants
• Stimulants-substances that speeds up the
body’s functions. Causes a rise in heartbeat,
breathing rate, blood pressure. Ex. Caffeine,
cocaine, crack, speed, methamphetamine
• Depressant-a substance that slows down the
body’s functions and reactions. Examples are:
Alcohol, Tranquilizers(valium, xanax),
Barbiturates( downers, barbs, yellowjackets),
Hypnotic(Quaaludes, ambien, lunesta,)
