The Global Village
In 1962, Canadian author Marshall McLuhan
wrote:
“The new electronic interdependence
reconfigures the world in the image of a
global village.”
What did he mean?
The concept of the
global village means
that the world has
seemed to grow smaller
because of major
advances in
transportation and
communications
technology.
These changes allow people, goods and
information to move from one location to
another much more quickly than they
could before.
Interdependence
Being mutually dependent
The interconnectedness of all living
things with each other
Decisions made in one part of the world
can have an impact on another part of
the world.
Globalization
The system of interaction among the
countries of the world in order to
develop the global economy
The ever-increasing flow of goods,
services, information, people and
communication around the world
Globalization - Good or
Bad?
Copy the following chart and identify
some of the advantages and
disadvantages of globalization.
Positive
Negative
“Every choice we make and every item we
consume has an…impact somewhere on
the planet…For example, eating
hamburgers encourages more cattle
ranching in, say, Central America on
unsuitable soils, resulting in destruction of
the world’s vital rainforests, soil erosion,
and an increase in the number of landless
peasants. A high cost for a quick snack.”
