The Biocean database was designed to gather the extremely large volume of data
collected from different deep-sea ecosystem studies conducted by Ifremer's
department "Environnement Profond". This database comes in a six application
package; two of them are used onboard research vessels to collect operational data,
while the others are used to link with a core database back on land.

The two Alamer applications are designed for data
input directly on board research vessels, with no link to
the core database. Echange Terre/Mer permits data
exchange between Alamer files and the Biocean core
database. Gescol follows faunal samples through their
identification process. Bioclass helps to manage the
taxonomic nomenclature. Donenv manages results of
environmental analyses (e.g. temperature, chemistry).

Examples of studies that can be developped using BIOCEAN data:
• Biodiversity of faunal assemblages
• Biogeographic inter-sites comparisons
• Faunal distribution as related to physico-chemical conditions
• Temporal intra-site evolution of environmental parameters and faunal composition
• Impact studies of global changes in deep-sea ecosystems
• Impact studies for deep-sea mining, oil exploitation and fisheries
