Exaggeration in Commercials
Why do advertisers so often use
exaggerations about their
products to sell their product?
Advertisers are in competition with
each other; the winner is the one
who sells there product to you.
Seriously Strong Cheese!
Exaggeration
• Images that portray extreme and
exaggerated situations are more likely to
catch the attention of a consumer than
those that do not.
Exaggeration of Emotion
• A great example of this type of advertising
is a commercial that portrays a woman
happily cleaning her home with a new
cleaning product.
• Most people would agree that they
wouldn't be too happy about cleaning up a
terrible mess.
Too much Photoshop?
Although these ads
may not be illegal
according to
government
regulations, the
regulatory agencies
have been cracking
down on advertising
photos that have been
Photoshopped to the
point of being
deceitful to
consumers.
