What do all three slides
have in common?
Are all of them interesting?
Did all of them catch your
attention?
Are all of them colorful?
All three slides are advertisements
An advertisement is a way of telling you
about a product or service. Its purpose is to
persuade you to buy it.
The word “advertisement” is often shortened
to ad or advert.
The purpose of an advertisement
is to get people to buy the product or
service advertised. To be successful,
an advertisement has to be
attractive
appealing
interesting
persuasive
informative
Look again at the paco
rabanne ad.
What do we know
about the product
from this ad?
What is its name?
Ultraviolet Man
What kind of product is it?
A cologne for men
Who makes it?
Paco Rabanne
Do we know anything else?
Only that it’s new.
The fact is
an ad doesn’t have to
give a lot of information.
But it does have to be persuasive.
How does this ad achieve that?
Is the Paco Rabanne ad successful?
Advertisements are
everywhere:
on TV
on the radio
in newspapers
and magazine
on the Internet
on buses
on packaging
in the street
Take a look at a picture of
a local shopping street.
How many ads can you find?
Don’t forget to check
the bus stop
the shops
billboards
delivery trucks and vans
the back of the bus
Where else?
The Advantages of Advertising
Advertising encourages competition.
Competition helps to keep
prices down.
Cheaper prices mean more
sales and a better economy.
BARGAIN OFFER
2 for the price of 1
Our prices are lower than anyone else’s !
The Advantages of Advertising
The money TV stations,
newspapers and magazines
get from advertising helps
keep them in business.
Every day, travelers on a New York
or London subway train read
newspapers that are free.
Who pays for this? The advertisers
The Disadvantages of Advertising
Companies want to sell their products
or services. They use advertising as a
way of persuading you that they have
the best product or service on the
market.
“Only Bantene hair conditioner provides
the vitamins your
hair needs.”
The Disadvantages of Advertising
“If you want to be active and strong,
take Vitimel every day.”
“New improved Whizzo – the wonder
washing power that washes
even whiter.”
When you hear the same
thing over and over again,
you get to believe it is true.
The Disadvantages of Advertising
Beautiful people, beautiful clothes,
beautiful food, beautiful cars, beautiful
places, beautiful animals ...
The advertiser promises you
a beautiful world.
“Buy our products and you
can be part of that beautiful world.”
You can start a collection of old signs.
Search on the Internet at
www.sodastuff.com.
For ONLY $450,
you can buy
a cardboard
Coca Cola sign.
Or for the bargain price of $275,
you can buy a Pepsi sign
“Drink Pepsi-Cola”
Andy Warhol
Advertising entered the
world of art when
Andy Warhol painted
a picture of a tin of
Campbell’s soup.
Warhol’s original picture is worth
millions of dollars.
