In 1971, cigarette advertisements on TV were
banned by federal law.
In 1998, the largest tobacco companies in the
United States settled a series of lawsuits with
the governments of 46 states. The tobacco
companies agreed to pay approximately $206
billion over 25 years for tobacco prevention.
- This required tobacco companies to remove all
billboard advertising and advertising in sports
arenas by 1999.
- The tobacco companies promised to stop using
cartoon characters to sell cigarettes and stop
distributing “gear” such as shirts and hats with
tobacco logos.
