WHY PEOPLE USE TOBACCO
 Most adolescents do not believe there
is a great risk in smoking cigarettes
 Friends and family smoke
 Experimentation
 Low self-esteem, susceptibility to
peer pressure
 Sensation-seeking, rebelliousness,
anxiety

Cigarettes
Cigars
Pipes
Chewing tobacco
Snuff (more finely cut or powdered
for sniffing or dipping)
What is in a Cigarette?
YOU SHOULD KNOW
 Smokers are more likely to die from
heart attack or stroke
 Women who take birth control pills and
smoke increase their risk of heart attack
several times
 “Light” cigarettes do not lower the risk
of heart disease
 After quitting, recovery time for heart
attack risk to reach that of a nonsmoker is 3-9 years
