WHY PEOPLE USE TOBACCO
Most adolescents do not believe there
is a great risk in smoking cigarettes
Friends and family smoke
Experimentation
Low self-esteem, susceptibility to
peer pressure
Sensation-seeking, rebelliousness,
anxiety
TYPES OF TOBACCO
Cigarettes
Cigars
Pipes
Chewing tobacco
Snuff (more finely cut or powdered
for sniffing or dipping)
What is in a Cigarette?
YOU SHOULD KNOW
Smokers are more likely to die from
heart attack or stroke
Women who take birth control pills and
smoke increase their risk of heart attack
several times
“Light” cigarettes do not lower the risk
of heart disease
After quitting, recovery time for heart
attack risk to reach that of a nonsmoker is 3-9 years
