Nicotine
This is the addictive drug found in tobacco. It’s a
natural poison produced by the tobacco plant to stop
insects eating it.
It is absorbed by the body very quickly and gets to
the brain within 7 seconds. It increases the heartbeat
rate and blood pressure. In large quantities nicotine
is extremely poisonous.
Tar
Brown and treacly in appearance, tar consists of tiny
particles and is formed when tobacco smoke condenses.
Tar is deposited in the lungs and respiratory system and
is gradually absorbed. It is a mixture of many different
chemicals. Tar stops your lungs working properly. It is
also responsible for staining smoker’s teeth and fingers.

This is a poisonous gas that stops your body getting the
oxygen that it needs, it also thickens the blood and makes
it hard for the heart to pump the blood around the body. It
is also found in car exhaust fumes.
