Transcript Crop & Food Research - Centre for Energy Research

Crop & Food Research
 is an independent, government-owned company
 provides research, technology and services to
the arable, vegetable, ornamental, seafood,
animal feed, plant products and forestry sectors
 employs 370 staff, including a few engineers,
based at 8 locations in NZ and 2 in Australia
 focuses on providing effective solutions for
clients
 42% of income is from privately-funded clients,
the balance being Crown-funded
Biofuels research history
C&FR as DSIR Crops Division, 1975-1985:
 Response to fuel price spikes and security of
supply issue (wide & active research…)
 Oil seed crops as diesel substitute included
rapeseed, soya, sunflower
 Carbohydrate crops for alcohols as petrol
substitute were sugarbeet, fodderbeet, sweetcorn
waste and Jerusalem artichokes
 Crop residues and willow for biomass energy
Crop research outlook
 Maize for ethanol; cooler climate options
 More productive new varieties of oil seed
crops: rapeseed, soya, sunflower
 New types of oil crops: tree leaves, algae
 New varieties sugarbeet, etc., plus woody
crops for alcohols (new enzymes)
 Crop residues and willow for biomass
energy
