Solution Specifications
Problem Definition
Shopping carts are too often left far
away from the perimeter of the
store (sometimes on the street)
or are stolen.
•
Our solution is to design a device
that locks the cart’s wheels once
they leave the store’s perimeter.
If a cost-efficient solution can be
found then the product could be
developed on a commercial
scale.
Transmitter sends a beacon every
second.
Receiver sounds the alarm if no
beacons have arrived in 3 seconds.
Using RF Link from seeedstudio.com.
315MHz radio frequency.
100m radius.
Working Voltage: 3-12VDC
(Transmitter), 5VDC(Receiver)
110dB buzzer.

We expect to finish the electrical
part of the system by the end of
this term.
We have online resources
(datasheets and code samples)
to complete this project.
Competitive Analysis
There are already similar
devices on the market, however
they lack safety and cost a lot to
implement. A locked cart flips
over when pushed because only
one wheel is locked.
Potential Applications
•
•
•
Shopping cart
Dog chain
Anywhere a virtual leash is needed
Future Improvement Ideas

Rechargeable battery with wheel
generator
Accelerometer enabled sleep
mode to save battery
