What is it?
16 June 2004
A 6U crate, containing

CAN Branch PSU




Power supply modules (up to 8)
CAN patch modules (up to 4)
Control & monitoring (ELMB)
Capacity


Maximum of 16 isolated branches
Each branch powering up to 32 CAN
devices (depending on load)
2
What does it do for you?
CAN Branch PSU
16 June 2004


Provides the required CAN supply voltages
Provides a convenient method of ‘patching’ the CAN
bus into the cabling to the remote devices

Connects directly to a Kvaser interface

Provides; via a CAN interface (DCS)


Monitoring (current, voltage) of each CAN bus branch.
ON/OFF control of each branch.





2 CAN branches
Each branch electrically
isolated
12V, 2A CAN bus supply
12V, 3A Digital + Analogue
supply

Patch Module

CAN Branch PSU
16 June 2004


4 CAN branches
Fitted to rear of
crate, patches
power & CAN bus
together
Takes 4 CAN inputs,
or 1 25way
connector from
Kvaser interface

Current Status
CAN Branch PSU
16 June 2004

Current activities


Electrical, Thermal & Operational testing
about to commence
Building of 5 pre-production units to
satisfy immediate requirements


5 crates, 20 PSU modules, 10 patch modules
This gives 5 half populated crates (8
branches), or an alternate combination

What will it cost?
CAN Branch PSU
16 June 2004



Costs are currently only estimates
Final unit costs will depend on production
quantities and the final production
contractor
Estimates shown below should be close, but
could vary in either direction

CAN Branch PSU
Fix quantities required






ALICE: ?
ATLAS: 40-50
CMS: ?
LHCb: 3-6
Search for a suitable contractor to build and
supply the production units (price enquiry)
Complete the testing, including EMC,
environmental etc.
Review production aspects of the design, to
improve cost, safety, reliability etc.

Procure

Against advance payments



As for VME crates, TTC equipment, VMEbus SBCs
Test
Provide second-line support


Repair
