HOW IMPORTANT ARE THE
FORESTS?
* Sources of fuel, lumber, and
materials for paper products
* They provide homes and food
for animals
* They provide watershed and
water supply for the low lands
* Trees in the forests protect the
land from erosion
Location:
Canada, Europe, Asia, and the
United States
Temperature:
40°C to 20°C, average summer
temperature is 10°C
Vegetation:
Coniferous-evergreen trees (trees that
produce cones and needles; some
needles remain on the trees all year long)
* spruces, pines, and first.
ADAPTATION:
Needle-like
leaves that
have a waxy
covering.
*The soil in the
coniferous
forest is not
fertile.
LOCATION:
Mid -latitude
- Eastern half of
North America, and
the middle of Europe
- Asia : Southwest Russia,
Japan , and Eastern China.
- South America:
Southern Chile and Middle East
- New Zealand
- Southeastern Australia
TEMPERATURE:
The average annual temperature
deciduous forest is 50° F.
COMMON PLANTS:
oak, beech, maple, chestnut, hickory,
elm basswood, linden, walnut and
sweet gum trees.
COMMON ANIMALS:
Squirrels, Salamanders, Birds (thrushes,
blue rays woodpeckers,)
ADAPTATIONS:
-The plants have adapted to the
forests by leaning toward the sun.
(Phototropism)
- The animals adapt to the climate
by hibernation and camouflage.
• Trees lose their leaves to
reduce water loss in dry winter.
LOCATION: Along the equator
- Central America in the Amazon river basin.
- Africa - Zaire basin, with a small area in
West Africa; also eastern Madagascar.
- Indo - Malaysia - west coast of India,
Assam, Southeast Asia, New Guinea and
Queensland, Australia
TEMPERATURE:
The temperature in a rain forest rarely
gets higher than 93 °F (34 °C) or drops
below 68 °F (20 °C);
Common Plants:
Tall trees (up to 50 or more), Epiphytes
Common Animals:
Snakes, lizards, frogs, monkeys, brightly
colored butterflies, mosquitoes,
camouflaged stick insects, and huge
colonies of ants, arboreal animals
ADAPTATIONS:
Animals: Camouflage
Plants: Large leaves to absorb greater
amount of sunlight
* It has the most fertile soil.
CAUSES OF
DEFORESTATION:
• LOGGING
• KAINGIN
• MINING
• BUILDING DAMS AND ROADS
• NATURAL CALAMITIES
EFFECTS
OF DEFORESTATION
1. Soil erosion
2. Loss of watershed
3. Loss of biodiversity
4. Change in climate
If you are one among
the animals in the
forest, how would
you want human
beings maintain your
habitat?
