What is a Tropical Rainforest?
• A Tropical Forest consisting of 4 layers
– Emergent Trees
– The Upper Canopy
– The Understory
– The Forest Floor
Emergent Trees
• Trees are about 100-240 feet tall.
• Small pointed leaves
• Umbrella shaped canopies that grow above
the forest.
• Strong Trunks, 30 foot wide root systems.
Upper Canopy
• Trees of 60-130 feet tall.
• Thin layers of trees allow light at the top, but
keeps the shade from going to the bottom.
• Most rainforest animals live in this layer.
• Tons of food is available
The Understory
• 60 foot trees
• This layer is made up of the trunks of canopy
trees, shrubs, plants and small trees.
• Constant Shade
• Little Air Movement, constantly high humidity
The Forest Floor
• Completely Shaded
• Few bushes and herbs can grow due to the
scarce sunlight
• People can walk around this level of the
rainforest
• Terrible soil quality
Where Rain isn’t shy
