-Kingdom Plantae, Order Fabales, Angiosperm, Dicot
-family includes herbs, shrubs, trees and vines distributed
throughout the world in both temperate and tropical areas,
especially the tropical rain forest.
-Can be recognized by
-Irregular flowers with 5 petals forming a distinctive
banner
-wings
-keel
-Pea-like pods are a distinctive trait of the family
-The leaves are usually alternate and compound.
-Third largest family of flowering plants
-Over 600 genera and 13,000 species worldwide
-Subfamilies and tribes of the Pea Family because of
its largeness
3 Pea Subfamilies
-Mimosoideae: 80 genera and 3,200 species. Mostly
tropical and warm temperate Asia and America.
-Caesalpinioideae: 170 genera and 2,000 species,
cosmopolitan.
-Faboideae: 470 genera and 14,000 species,
cosmopolitan.
-In 1695, Sicily was home to the first recorded presence of sweet
peas. Peas were transported to the United States during the early 1700s.
-Pea plants were part of the earliest foundations of genetic
research. Gregor Mendel used the pea variety Pisum sativum for genetic
studies because of how easy it was to breed differences into the peas.Read
