Why the Learning Pit?
Allows learners to make mistakes and learn from them
Can be easily differentiated so all learners are challenged
appropriately
A pit lesson is dynamic and progress can be evaluated constantly
The pit allows learners to independently make connections
between ideas
The pit encourages learners to be resilient, curios, reflective and
supportive
What’s the problem?
Blood needs to carry food molecules to different cells around the
body
Carbohydrate

Protein

You must solve the problem!

Molecules of
food are too
big to get into
the blood
from the small
intestine!!
Task: Use the information to solve the problem
Challenge: Use the challenge card to explain HOW
enzymes work in terms of “active sight” and “lock and Key”
Apply
Peter was born with no glandular tissue in
his stomach
The glandular tissue in the stomach secretes
an enzyme that breaks down protein
Suggest why Peter gets stomach aches if he
eats lots of meat and fish
Ideas for the structure of a pit lesson
Organise students into
pre-planned groups or
pairs. Good to have roles
if using groups
Students then apply what they
have learnt to new unfamiliar
situations - differentiated
Diagnose prior learning (e.g. using
discussion of a picture or quick
quiz?)
Students that are “ready”, move
on, those identified as not “ready”
given “therapy”
There may be a progress check
mid point to check understanding
so far
Main: Give students key
question(s) or a problem to solve.
Different groups may be given
different problems/questions
depending on outcomes
Through discussion/group
work/questioning, students meet
their own outcomes
Students are given
resources/strategies/criteria on
how to solve problem/answer
question(s)
