•Analyze the levels of
biological organization
Living things are studied on different
levels.
These levels (from smallest to largest) are:
1.Molecules: groups of atoms; smallest
unit of most chemical compounds.
Ex. Water, carbon dioxide,
DNA
2. Cells: smallest unit of structure and
function of life
3. Tissues: groups of cells united
together to perform a specific
function
Ex. skin, adipose, muscle tissues
4. Organs: a collection of different
tissues unified to perform a specific
function.
Ex. Brain, heart, lung, stomach, kidney
5. organ system: a collection of organs that
work together to perform a specific function
Ex. Cardiovascular system,
digestive system, central
nervous system
6. organism: an entire individual living
thing
Ex. Person, cow, dog, insect,
protozoan, bacteria
Pugs Rule!
7. Population: groups of organisms of
the same species living in the same area.
Ex. Deer population, human
population
8. Community: populations that live together
in a defined area.
Ex. Deer, hawks, mice, grass
9. Ecosystem: community and its abiotic
surroundings.
Ex. Meadow, forest, pond, lake
10. Biosphere: the part of the earth that
contains all ecosystems.
