HUMAN BIOLOGY

cells tissues organs organ systems
BODY TISSUES
• muscle: contract in coordination upon
stimulation (skeletal, cardiac, smooth)
• nervous: receive and transmit information
and signals (made of cells called neurons)
• epithelial: line surfaces of bodies, cavities,
canals
• connective
1. bone, cartilage, tendons, blood
2. cells surrounded by extra-cellular, nonliving tissue
ORGANS
• tissues working together
ORGAN SYSTEMS
• Muscular: support
and movement
•
Skeletal: protection
and support
• Circulatory: transport • Respiratory: gas
of gases, nutrients,
exchange
waste, and chemicals
to all parts of the body.
• Immune: fights
pathogens
•
Integumentary
(skin): protection
• Endocrine: controls • Nervous: regulation,
conduction, and
body function via
chemical messengers. coordination
• Excretory:
removal of liquid
and solid wastes
• Digestive:
breakdown and
absorption of
food
• Reproductive:
production of sex
cells (offspring)
BODY CAVITIES
• spinal, cranial, thoracic,
diaphragm, abdominal,
pelvic
Feedback Loops
• Positive (Rarer)
– The response of the system creates more of the
same response
– Run on the Bank, Allergic Reaction, Awful sound
from a speaker
• There is a rumor that a bank is going out of business. People
get scared and start going to the bank to take out their money.
People see that the bank is getting weak because of all the
people taking out their money so they go to take their money.
This happens more and more until the bank has no more
money and goes out of business.
• Negative Feed back
– The response of the system causes the action to
stop
– Thermostat, Insulin
– When you set your thermostat to heat it turns the
heat on and then the room heats up. When the
room reaches a certain temperature, the thermostat
reacts and turns off the heater. The room then
cools down and the cycle reapeats.
