Performance Objective: Describe the factors
that led to the founding and settlement of the
thirteen original American colonies including
religious prosecuting, economic opportunity,
geography, adventure, and forced migration.
Today, I will locate and identify the 13
colonies.
My job is to distinguish between the 3 kinds
of regions for the 13 colonies.

People left Europe and
came to America to
start practicing the
religion that they
wanted

50% of the people that came over to the New
World were indentured servants
They couldn’t afford to come to America
Signed a contract instead to work as a servant
in America
African villages caught their own people and
sold them to the Europeans
The Europeans then carried them to the
Americas to work on plantations and farms
Charter colony – consisted of a document
granting permission to a group to settle and
trade in a certain area
◦ Example: Virginia
Royal colony – under direct control of a king
Proprietary colony – granted to an individual
or group by the British crown and that was
granted full rights of self-government
◦ Example: Maryland, Pennsylvania
Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island,
and New Hampshire
Economics – fishing, made their own clothes and
shoes, shipbuilding, industry, timber, furs,
craftsmen
Climate – summers were mild, but winters were
very cold
Crops – limited by hilly terrain and rocky soil
Transportation – major ports
People lived by fish, timber, and fur
Religion – Pilgrims, Puritans, and Quakers
New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and
Delaware
Economics – agriculture and industry,
farmlands, mills (textile/paper)
Climate – coastal lowlands, moderate climate
Transportation – harbors and bays (wide,
deep rivers)
People lived by grains; nicknamed
“breadbasket colonies”
Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina and South
Carolina
Economics – agriculture,
plantations, farmland
Climate – humid, great for
growing crops
Crops – cotton, tobacco, rice,
sugar, and indigo
Transportation – harbors and
rivers
People lived by farming and
had indentured servants and
slaves

3. What region of colonies is North Carolina in?
4. What colony is east of Connecticut?
5. Which region of colonies is New York in?
6. Which region of colonies had a good climate
for agriculture?
7. Which region of colonies was nicknamed the
“breadbasket” colonies and why?
Imagine they are a colonist who lives in one of
the 13 colonies.
Write a letter back to your family in Great
Britain about your life in America. Must be at
least 7 sentences! The letter must include:
Your name (real or made up)
Name of the colony you live in
Name of the region the colony is in
Your job
List the main crops in your colony
Describe your home and the town you live in
List the major cities (ports) you go to when you need
to trade
