Where in the World Is It?
The temperate deciduous forest is found in:
» Eastern United States,
» Canada
» Europe
» parts of Russia
» China
» Japan
Regions & Their Locations
•mixed mesophytic forest region – centrally located,
oldest and most complex region in the biome
•Appalachian oak forest region lies to the east, north
and southeast of the mixed mesophytic forest
•hemlock-white pine-northern hardwood region is
situated along the northern edge of the biome,
bordering the northern coniferous forest
•oak-hickory forest region occupies the drier area to the
west of the mixed mesophytic forest region
•maple-basswood forest region, which is situated
in lower Minnesota, northeastern Iowa, and
western Wisconsin, comprises the northwestern
corner of the temperate deciduous forest
•beech-maple forest region is found almost
entirely within Indiana and northern Ohio
•oak-pine region occupies an area between
the hardwoods of the Appalachians and the
pure pines of the southlands
•southern pine region occupies an area
comprised of the Gulf and Atlantic Coastal
Plains, plus the Piedmont of the eastern and
southern Appalachians

Four Seasons
Deciduous means to change
color in autumn, fall off in the
winter, and grow back again in the
spring.
This adaptation helps trees in
the forest survive winter.
Autumn has shorter days and cooler
weather.
Green chlorophyll in the leaves begins
to decompose, revealing brilliant oranges,
yellows, and reds.
contains a great variety of animals
ranging from rodents like squirrels to
large mammals like bears
animals must be able to adjust to the
range in temperature from the cold
winters to the hot summers by
hibernating, migrating or staying active
Plants
• There are a great many species of plant life in the temperate
deciduous forest
• Varieties of oak, maple and pine trees make up the canopy level
of the forest
• Plants such as ferns, grasses and mosses cover the forest floor
Human Impact
Some instances of human impact on the temperate deciduous
forest include:
• deforestation
• clear cuts
• pulp and paper sites
• burns
• replanting and young
plantations
The above is a young plantation
• many of these areas are being used for urban
settlements, which is killing the environment
by pollution
What Will the Temperate
Deciduous Forest Look Like in
50 – 100 years?
If things keep going the way they are going our temperate
deciduous forests will soon look like this:
or
The Future of the Biome – What
is to Come?
• the temperate deciduous forest is the most popular place for
people to inhabit
• we can do so much to keep this biome alive such as:
only remove trees we need
replant trees we remove
reduce pollution from cities
Unless we do something about the condition of the forest,
there will no longer be a temperate deciduous forest to be
worried about
