Survivable Remote Site Telephony
How it works
• IP Phones exchange Keep alive messages and Call Processing
messages with Centrally located CallManager (CCM)
• WAN Link fails – IP phones lose contact with CCM
• IP Phones register with local router as CallManager of last resort
• Router queries phones for configuration and auto-configures itself
• Router provides call processing for duration of failure via PSTN
• Upon restoration of WAN, IP Phones revert back to CCM

57
Why is Digital Video Networking
Important?
• Improve Learning
Visual communication more effective than verbal only
• Increase Flexibility and Reach
Video can now be sent anywhere the computer network reaches (wireless, internet,
etc.) - no longer tethered to coax
Reach students in remote locations – home, other districts
• New Applications
Technological advancements allow for applications previously not possible
TV to the desktop, video-on-demand, interactive communication
• Reduce Costs
Convergence, no need for a separate video network

58
Morning Announcements
Then
Time rounding up all the
students into the biggest
room possible.
Principal delivers
message.
Now
Principals can
deliver the morning
announcement
from their offices
through live
streaming
Students and teachers
watch the announcement
from the classroom using
a normal computer
connected to the IP
network
Time getting everyone
back to classroom.
© 2007 Confidential and Proprietary to AMS.NET Only
59
Cable TV Distribution
Then
TV in the classroom
connected to coax or web
subscriptions to content
providers
Separate infrastructure to
purchase and maintain
© 2007 Confidential and Proprietary to AMS.NET Only
Now
Teachers use their
computer to deliver
classroom material
while seamlessly
switching between
cable TV channels
and their planned
material
Students can view cable
channels using a regular
computer connected to the
IP network in both the
classroom and their
dormitory rooms
60
Lecture Delivery
Then
Teacher gives lecture at fixed
time/day
If you can’t make it to class or
homebound student you must
rely on someone else’s notes
© 2007 Confidential and Proprietary to AMS.NET Only
Now
Teachers stream
their lectures live
while recording
them for future
playback
Students can view the
lectures live from
anywhere on the network
– student lounge, overflow
classroom and their
dormitory rooms
61
Delivery of stored assets
Then
Now
Visit the media center to check
out a tape and arrange for
VCR/DVD cart
Teachers access the
video-on-demand
right from their PC
and send the video
to the classroom TV
or digital projector
© 2007 Confidential and Proprietary to AMS.NET Only
Students with permissions
can view any of the stored
assets from anywhere on
the network
62
Special Events
Then
Now
Graduation logistics including
weather restrict who can
attend the festivities
You are provided a limited
number of tickets for your
friends and family
© 2007 Confidential and Proprietary to AMS.NET Only
Ceremonies are
streamed live to
overflow rooms and
over the Internet to
friends and family
who could not
attend
The graduation can also
be recorded and stored for
reunions as well as
burned to create a DVD
for past alumni to be used
in fund raising efforts
63
Rich Media Presentations
Then
Instructor prepares a PPT
handout for the class lecture
The PPT is made available
to students who jot down
notes during the lecture
© 2007 Confidential and Proprietary to AMS.NET Only
Now
Teachers give a rich
media lecture with
their presentation
synchronized to the
PPT slides while it is
streamed live over
the network and
recorded for future
reference
Students can view the rich
media lectures live from
anywhere on the computer
network as well as replay
