• Son of Zebedee and brother of John.
• He was put to death by Herod Agrippa I.
• Spanish tradition, body taken to Santiago de Compostela.
• Santiago became a major pilgrimage center.
• Depicted leading the Christian against the Moors.
• Emblems: scallop shell and a pilgrim's hat
• Feast day July 25.
Martyrdom AD 44, Acts 12:1-2
• King Herod Agrippa I in AD 44 perpetrated cruelties upon the Church,
whose rapid growth enraged the Jews.
• The zealous temper of James and his leading part in the Jewish
Christian communities probably led King Herod to choose him as the
first victim.
• "He killed James, the brother of John, with the sword (Acts 12: 1-2).
• James' zeal for Jesus resulted in his being the first of the 12 apostles
to be martyred.

Saint James the Greater Moor Slayer
• Moor Definition: a member of a northwestern African Muslim people
of mixed Berber and Arab descent. In the 8th century they conquered
the Iberian peninsula, but were finally driven out of their last
stronghold in Granada at the end of the 15th century.
