The Crusades
A Crusade for Points
By 1095, the Seljuks (a Muslim group)
were close to taking over
Constantinople.
The Byzantine Emperor does not
have a strong Army? He needs help.
Who do you think he asked for help?
Give your self a point if you said the
Pope.
The Byzantine Emperor
asked Pope Urban II for
help. The pope and
church leaders met and
decided to help
Constantinople. They
decide to send soldiers on
a “Crusade” to drive the
Muslims back and to take
back Jerusalem.
Pope Urban II gave a speech to encourage
knights, nobles and serfs to join the
Crusade. Why do you think many agreed
to go on the Crusade (up to 4 points
possible)?
Give your self a point if you said: The Pope
promised entry to Heaven
a point if you said: People joined for adventure.
a point if you said: Some joined to get land.
a point if you said: Some joined to make money trading
Four nobles led the first Crusaders. About
30,000 crusaders successfully took land in
Syria and then surrounded Jerusalem.
After the Crusaders climbed the city walls,
the people of Jerusalem surrendered.
What do you think happened to many
of the Muslim and Jewish citizens of
Jerusalem?
Give your self two points if you said they were
killed or sold into slavery
Most Crusaders
went home, but
some stayed and
set up four
crusader
kingdoms.
The First Crusade
was successful for
the Crusaders
because the Muslims
were not well
organized. Later,
Saladin becomes the
general for the
Muslims. He is a
strong leader.
Do you think Saladin was able to win
back Jerusalem for the Muslims?
Give your self one point for saying YES Saladin
won Jerusalem back.
New Groups of
Crusaders set out
to take back
Jerusalem. In
1212 tens of
thousands of
children set out on
a “Children’s
Crusade.”
Out of the Tens of Thousands of
Children who set out about how many
do you think made it to Jerusalem?
Give your self one point if you said 0.
What do you think happened to them?
Give your self one point each if you said they
were sold into slavery, returned home or
probably died.
None of the later
Crusades are
successful in
taking Jerusalem
back from the
Muslims. In 1204
the city of
Constantinople
was sacked.
Think about what religion the city of
Constantinople practiced and who
they asked for help when they were
threatened by the Muslims. Who do
you think sacked Constantinople,
Christians or Muslims? Explain.
Give your self a point if you said the Christian Crusaders. Give
yourself 5 points if you said that the Crusaders saw things that they
did not have because they were coming from Western Europe in the
Middle Ages. They decided to steal goods from Constantinople.
We know that the Crusades were not
successful for the Christians in
retaking Jerusalem. Do you think the
Crusades weakened or strengthened
the Pope? Why?
Give your self one point if you said weakened. Give
yourself three points if you said He started the Crusades
with his speech. The Crusades were not a success for the
Christians.
Many nobles (but few kings) left to
fight in the Crusades. When the
Crusades are over, who do you think
will have more power, nobles or
monarchs?
Give your self a point if you said monarchs. This
will help end feudalism.
The Crusades have a big impact on
trade. Do you think the Crusades will
increase or decrease trading? Explain.
Give your self a point if you increase trade. Give
yourself 5 points if you explained the Crusaders left
their manors and saw that the Byzantine and Islamic
Empires had stuff that they didn’t have and that they
wanted that stuff.
How do you think the Crusades
impacted feelings between Christians
and Muslims and Jews? Explain.
Give your self a point if you said the Crusades caused
bitterness and angry feelings. Give yourself five points if
you said the Christian Crusaders killed Muslims and Jews
when they took Jerusalem or the Crusades pitted one
religious group against others.
The Crusades started with a plea for
help from the Byzantine Empire. Was
it a wise decision to ask for help? Did
the Crusades strengthen or weaken
the Byzantine Empire? Explain.
Give your self a point you said the Crusades weakened
the Byzantine Empire. Give yourself three points if you
said the Crusaders sacked Constantinople.
