Crusades Note Cards
Crusades
 Fought by Christians to reclaim the holy
lands from the Muslims and to unite all
Christians.
 Muslims had taken over lands that were
considered to be sacred to both faiths.
They had also destroyed churches and
enraged the Christians.
Crusader
 One who fought for the church and was
marked with a cross.
 Included commoners, knights, and women
and children.
 Faced difficulties such as lack of food, water,
and shelter, heat, and the strenuous journey.
 Fought because they were committed to their
faith.
Penitential Warfare
 Idea that killing in the name of the
church was accepted.
 If you died in battle then you were a
martyr and went straight to heaven.
This was a way for people to justify
fighting in the crusades because they
wanted to achieve salvation.
Jerusalem
 Sacred land for Christians, Muslims, and
Jews. Located between Israel and
Palestine.
 Christians and Muslims fought over the
city in the Crusades and control over
Jerusalem has switched hands many
times.
Pope Urban
 Church leader who wanted to unite all
Christians. Gives a speech in Clermont
France calling for all people to join the
crusades and fight against the Muslims.
First Crusade
 Only one that was successful for the
Christians and was most document.
 100,000 people set out for Jerusalem.
Won Antioch first and then “some” set
on for Jerusalem. Christians won and
then returned home and those who did
not participate are shunned.
German Crusade
 Christians fighting in the Crusades that
went to Germany and fought Jews.
They attacked them and raided their
villages. Many were killed.
 Christians during the Crusades would
attack any non-Christian group.
Excommunicated
 To be kicked out of the church and
banned from participating in church
activities.
 The French Knights of the 4th Crusade
were excommunicated by the Pope
because they attacked the Christian city
of Zara.
Crusades Impact
 Restored and united people under the
church. Created an idea of heroism.
Made people reflect on their religion.
Created a division between Christians
and Muslims that still exists today.
Knights Templar
 Group of Knights that came together to
offer protection to pilgrims traveling to
the holy lands.
 They are surrounded by secrecy and
mystery and many believe hold a
treasure of relics (religious items) and
other artifacts somewhere in the world.
