questions from Setting a Purpose for Reading at
the beginning of the section.
What was the impact of the Renaissance on European civilization?
European scholars rediscovered the works of Greek and Roman
philosophers, geographers, and mathematicians. Europeans
made key navigational instruments which allowed them to travel
long distances and explore the world.
How would you describe the culture of early West African kingdoms?
Three great empires rouse in West Africa- Ghana, Mali, and
Songhai. All three gained power and wealth through the trade of
gold and salt. Slavery in Africa existed for centuries before
Europeans landed there. Kings often enslaved their own people in
exchange for trade items. The culture of Africa was centered
around the trade routes that passed through the Saharah desert.
