Marco Polo’s visit to China caused
Europeans to demand goods traded
along the Silk Road.
Europeans
wanted silk!
Europeans wanted gems!
Europeans wanted spices.
(mostly
pepper and cloves)
WHY?
(click)
To preserve food over the winter.
Trading goods along the Silk Road became
expensive.
WHY?
…because goods carried along the Silk Road changed hands
often. With each trade, the price would rise.
PRICES ROSE!
So the Europeans sought a sea route to Asia.
Bartholomeu Dias
Vasco da Gama
Is it possible
to reach Asia
by ship?
Prince Henry of
Portugal helped
develop the
caravel.
“A caravel is a small, highly maneuverable, two- or three-masted
ship created by the Portuguese and used also by them and by the
Spanish for long voyages of exploration from the 15th century.”
Something new- entrance animation called ”float”
and typing effect of text.
In 1488 Bartholomeu Dias sailed to the tip
of Southern Africa, later named the
Cape of Good Hope.
Vasco da Gama of Portugal made it to Asia
by rounding the tip of Africa in 1498.

Christopher Columbus

Northwest Passage - a sea route to Asia.
John Cabot’s ship – the ‘Matthew’
After Columbus’s voyage, many other explorers crossed
the Atlantic and made discoveries in the New World.
Explorers came from:
England, France, Spain, Portugal, and the Netherlands.
ENGLISH EXPLORERS
GIOVANNI CABOTO was known as
JOHN CABOT
“Cabot explored the Canadian
coastline and named many of its
islands and capes. The mission's
purpose was to search for a Northwest
passage across North America to Asia
(a seaway to Asia). Cabot was
unsuccessful, although he thought that
he had reached northeastern Asia.”

seven crew members adrift in a small,
open boat in Hudson Bay.
Hudson sailed for England and the Netherlands
French Explorers

• Searched for a Northwest Passage to Asia
• In 1534, Cartier reached Newfoundland
SPANISH EXPLORERS:

fountain of youth.

led an expedition across
Central America and
discovered the Pacific

By 1713 the New World looked like this:
