- Wanted to stop Arab
middlemen who just
conquered
Constantinople from
keeping prices too high on
pepper, spices, and silk.
Bartholomeu Dias
• Dias was the first to
sail around the Cape of
Good Hope in Africa.
Vasco da Gama
• Became first sailor to
reach India
• Da Gama returned to
Portugal with loads of
spice and made a HUGE
profit.
• Portuguese returned in
1509 and defeated the
Muslim warships (trying
to defend their trade)

Asia by sailing west.

home to Spain
• Only 18 of the 250 men made it home.
