Personal Background:
Christopher Columbus was born
in 1451 in Genoa, off the coast
of Italy
As a child, Columbus Read
about the travels of Marco
Polo
His father was a wool Merchant
and he had a brother named
Bartholomew
Before being an explorer, he was
a sailor at age 15
He died in May 20th, 1506
Motives:
Christopher Columbus
wanted to explore
because he wanted to
prove that he could get to
Asia quicker by sailing
west across the Atlantic
Ocean
Sponsor:
Christopher Columbus tried to find
someone to pay for his voyage to
Asia, but the kings of Portugal,
France, and England turned him
down
Finally after almost 13 years, he
convinced Queen Isabella and
King Ferdinand of Spain to pay
for his voyage
They gave him 3 ships named the
Pinta, Nina, and the Santa Maria,
and about 90 men, but Columbus
had to bring back riches
Route of Exploration:
To get to Asia, Christopher
Columbus headed southwest
across the Atlantic Ocean
Impact:
When Columbus and his crew
landed at the island,
Columbus claimed the land
for Spain and called it
San Salvador which
means, “ Holy Savior”
They were greeted by
friendly people which he
called,” Indians” because
he thought he had
reached the East Indies
He captured some Indians
as prisoners
Dates:
On August 3rd, 1492 Christopher
Columbus left Spain with his
three ships
On the early morning of October
12th,1492 one of Columbus’
men spotted an island with
white beaches and dense green
forests
About 6 months later, in
September 1493 Columbus
returned to the Americas
Later on, he went on 3 more
voyages
Fun Fact:
Christopher Columbus was originally buried in Spain
but his remains were moved to Santo Domingo
and then back to Spain
