The Article Page
• New article page simplifies a complex
environment for users
• Focus on tools and most related content;
all assets on the page are germane to the
article and the topic
• Abstract presented on same page as full
text – if a user has full text access, he or
she sees the entire article without having
to click a “full text” button, which saves
time.
• Interactivity with content supports
researcher workflow (ie, tables and
figures)
• Graphical and textual cues throughout the
page guide navigation
• “Tabbed” design represents how users
want to consume different content assets
and reduces scrolling

New, Smarter Topic Collections
• Topic collections are refined and better organized
• Topic collections are updated automatically when content
is published
• Semantic tagging + editorial curation = most relevant
selections for users
• Users can sign up for RSS feeds and Alerts letting them
know when topic collections are updated
• Specialty & Topic collections are available at the JAMA
Network level and at the journal level for JAMA and all
Archives Journals
• Topic collections will be highlighted on homepages to
give more prominence

How do we “Standardize” these terms?
• Authors use different terminology to
represent the same subjects in different
journals (and even within the same journal)
• Examples:
spinal paralytic poliomyelitis
– Synonyms (newborn = neonate)
– Acronyms (GHB = gamma hydroxybutyrate)
– Shorthand (c diff = clostridium difficile)
• Different readers use different variations,
resulting in different numbers and rankings of
results
• A semantic layer with a controlled vocabulary
and thesaurus standardizes these differences
and make user data connections smarter
Heine-Medin disease
anterior poliomyelitis
infantile spinal
paralysis
acute atrophic
paralysis
anterior spinal
paralysis
epidemic infantile
paralysis

Integrated Multimedia
• Multimedia content is more prominent,
integrated, and user friendly
• Audio, video, and interactive graphics are
highlighted on JAMA Network home, journal
homepages, ToCs, Multimedia link from
navigation bar, and at the article level
• Audio files play within the page; video and
interactive graphics play with one click
• Videos can play on any platform or device
• “Related Multimedia” widget on article pages
is automatically generated based on topics
• Audio and video files are hosted by Libsyn
Pro and Brightcove, both industry leaders
• Slide 19

Searching within the JAMA Network
• New search functionality vastly improves the way
users find the most relevant content
• Unique Silverchair search technology based on
semantic tagging and full text, plus Advanced search
for DOI, citation, author, and more
• Results are based on concepts (what the article is
really about), not just word matches
• Interactive and dynamic results filtering tools allow
users to quickly drill down to the type of articles and
subject areas they need to find
• Users can sign up for email alerts that will replicate the
exact search terms and filters applied for most
relevant, real-time updates when content is published
• Search results include clearly marked indicators of
CME, multimedia, supplemental material, and the
semantic concepts related to each article

• On the new site, results
are based on the search
concept, resulting in more
targeted results
• The user can refine
results based on concepts
and article types
• One click gets the user to
the full text of the article
and all related assets
• Content in other JAMA
Network journals is
displayed as well
• For a full citation select
