Growth of Territory and Trade
• Starting in 400 BC the Rome Republic
grew quickly
– Within 200 years conquered ALL of Italy
Farming and Trading
• Farmers could NOT grow enough food
to support the city’s population
– Brought in food from parts of the
Mediterranean
Territory
• Grew mainly in response to outside
threats
• Army organized
– Legions- groups of Roman soldiers
– Centuries- small groups of soldiers
Rome Grows Beyond Italy
• Punic Wars
– A series of wars against Carthage
• Between 264-146 BC went to war three times
– 2nd Punic War- Hannibal
• Led attack against Rome, never succeeded
• War elephants
• Conquered Greece
– Romans adopted Greek culture and ideas
Crises Strikes the Republic
• Tiberius and Gaius Gracchus [GRAK-uhs]
– Brothers; both served as Tribunes
– Wanted to create farms for the poor
– Violent deaths changed Rome politics
• Saw violence as a political weapon
Marius and Sulia
• Civil war
• Sulia won; declared himself dictator
Spartacus
• Famous gladiator
• Slaves rose up; demanded their
freedom
• Took over southern Italy
– Ultimately defeated after Spartacus was killed
in battle
